I have a confession to make.
I’m writing this report on Monday 30th May, eight days after this match took
place. My editor-in-chief usually insists on a faster turnaround, which is
quite right, as in normal times, the little incidents and weird happenings
that make up each game quickly fade. But of course, these are very far from
normal times. At the time of writing
Psycho is just out of ICU, on a regular ward and hopefully on the road to a
full recovery. Players are still trying to process the rollercoaster of
emotions which are the fallout from Friday evening. Maybe there will be a lot
more written about this at some point, but not now. I have some other news,
very sad to report, that beloved club mascot (no offense giant duck) Midge
passed away last week. There are no official statistics on how many games
Midge attended, but if it was even half of the games that Dave has played, it
would still be over a hundred. In her early days Midge would arrive at a
ground and then disappear off into some surrounding field, hedgerow
or muddy ditch, only to reappear 3-4 hours later, sometimes after a few cries
of MIDGE! from Dave. In her later years, she was content to sit with the
players and was not fussy about which lap she would sleep on. She had and
unerring understanding of where the boundary was and what it was for. Rarely
if ever did she encroach on the field of play. She will be forever associated
with a certain baby muntjac deer at Jesus college. Best wishes Midge, a
lovely dog. Midge and her long doting owner (Mr Shorten) top
left. And so, finally, to the
match against our longstanding and much liked opponents Wootton and Bladon. I
suspect at this point Spam (ahem) will introduce a photo of me prior to the
game. All I’ll say is that it was a lot colder when I left Oxford than when I
arrived in Cassington at one of the may Red Lion
pubs in the area. Russ, still settling
into the role of full time Sunday skipper, got off to a cracker by winning
the toss. So, what do I remember of our innings? Not a lot if I’m honest.
Nuno got us off to a good start, hitting several 4’s in quick succession on
his way to a 39. JCB scored only one, before being caught by Floyd (he will
always have a special place in their hearts having started his ‘career’ with
them.) I was in at three, not because I am suddenly a top order batman, but
because the familiar (to many players) rotator cuff injury currently has me
and I’m more of an on-field observer than a player at the moment. I didn’t
last long. Andrew Darley played a
particularly Darlyesk innings including a
magnificent six, before being run out. I can’t remember how, but it was
probably something to do with Russ and hilarious. Former skipper Timms played
nicely for a 21 n.o. and was assisted towards the
end by Hoskins, whose confidence is high at the moment. Together they got us
to a reasonably respectable total of 146. Would it be fair to say
the highlight of the match was teas? Not that this was a poor game, but
c’mon, teas! For the first time in over two years, a proper sit down at
tables, cup of tea and everything, tea! Provided by Mr and Mrs D Hambridge, what a joy and also a sense that perhaps a bit
of normality has returned. Once again, let’s hear it for teas! Timms’ demonstrating there is still that fifty in
him (somewhere). MAD Moment was provided
by Russ’s missus Jackie. There was some of those stupid exercise machines
they sometimes have in parks that nobody ever uses – except Jackie. The match
was paused briefly to tell her to stop doing her best Olivia Newton-John
let’s get physical on the Nordic Track, right behind the bowler’s arm. So, what do I remember
of us bowling? Even less. Here the scorebook is little help either, a right
dog’s dinner. Apparently, we had six bowlers, although figures are recorded
for seven. Darley (7-4-16-1) bowled extremely well as did a certain Mr Rundle
(6.4-1-26-1). Nuno carried on his good form with another four wickets. The
match hinged on a bowl from JMO to T Poole when he was on about 18. It struck
the stumps quite firmly, but alas the bails did not fall. He went on to 71.
W&B were still 13 runs short when the eighth wicket went down and The MAD sniffed another unlikely Sunday win.
However, Floyd and Trinder saw them home as the overs ticked away. Finally, back to the Red
Lion, looking forward to a quiet and uneventful week ahead. ‘Reevsie’
