August 1997 and the dulcet tones of Des Lynam echo out from Match of the Day. “Well, the result of this month’s goal of the month is quite extraordinary. In third place, goal nine, Dennis Bergkamp, in second place goal four, Dennis Bergkamp and in first place, goal 10, Dennis Bergkamp”. Never had three examples of such brilliance been demonstrated in such a short space of time by one individual, putting other great feats on the same stage in the shade. Until now that is, but more on that later.

The omens weren’t looking good for this one with The MAD suffering to usual post tour stresses, strains, extended hangovers etc. More importantly, we were missing several of the ‘big beasts’ in the form of Howarth, Turner and Timms, meaning that Lee stepped into the captain’s trousers for the day. He lost the toss, but then it was considered not a bad one to lose as neither skipper had a firm idea of what would work best. As it happened, we were batting.

Lee (51 n.o) had the confidence to lead from the front, so opened with Nuno (35). The view from the sidelines was that against some excellent bowling, from the likes of youngster Crawford and a pitch providing a series of poppers and shooters, nobody could have done more, but still when Nuno departed after 17.2 overs the score had crawled up to 56. Not quite Geoffball, but neither was it looking likely to be competitive. There was a brief appearance from Taiga (4) and an even briefer one from Cartwright (0) before Shorten (36) stripped off his silk pajamas and headed out. He said batting felt great, the bat like a feather in his hands. He then realised it was Darley’s bat he was using, so a MAD moment nominee ensued as he swapped to his own blade. Champagne nominee number one came as he middled one beautifully into a tree outside the boundary before the ball ricocheted back about 10 yards on to the pitch. The match started to turn at that point and with late contributions from Darley (12) and Harris (1 n.o.) we reached a more than creditable 149 off 35 overs. Lee reached his 50 off the second to last ball and joins a select few to carry their bat through an entire innings.

It was good to see Russ and Jake turn up towards the end of the innings. Russ having recovered from his operation earlier in the week and Jake having recovered from Tour. At tea Shorten observed that he had a clover leaf stuck to his shoe. Not the four-leaf variety, but a good omen surely?

Mr Shorten, a man who can seemingly do not wrong in the field this year.

So, to the reply then and what can we say other than we were on fire, and everything went our way. Opening bowlers Darley (7-0-15-3) and Rundle (7-1-18-3) tore into their youngsters and oldsters. Joe got the party started with a good grab at gully. Reeves took a nice one at slip off Darley. Then it happened. The dangerous looking Brennar had been biffing a few, but now he got hold of one and skied it way over Darley’s head. Shorten sprinted round from long on, but surely just to stop the two. As the ball was about to hit the turf, he didn’t break stride, but dived and stuck out one hand. The ball stuck between his first and second fingers. A truly remarkable catch, I don’t think anyone, him, Darley, Brennar or the rest of us could quite believe it. Start practicing that one for the AGM Dennis.

That really took the wind out of Islip and wickets then fell at regular intervals until they were slumped at 39 for 7. At that point Black (37) and Hambridge threatened something of a comeback and dark thoughts were beginning to enter the mind. Until that is, Shorten completed his hat-trick of Champagne moments, a wonderful direct hit run out to dismiss Hambridge. Still, we weren’t done and there was time for a second direct hit run out, this time from Kaito. It is not reported whether Shorten still had that clover leaf attached to his shoe at this point. Okay, so technically Kaito’s run out made the final list of Champagne moments, but why let the facts spoil a good narrative?

There was time for a MAD moment as Nuno and Kaito sprinted after a ball that was hit between them. They were so engrossed in the running race that they forgot about the ball entirely and both sprinted several yards past it, before having to turn around in comedic style.

Harris provided the final nail in the Islip innings, bowling Black and finishing them on 85. A great win then, congratulations to everyone, special mention to Lee for captaining and providing a platform that the rest of the guns in the bag could build on.
