Monday morning and our Fixtures Secretary is wondering what his pending holiday will bring. Here’s a clue Ian, you were down in that part of the world just six days ago, it won’t have changed much. When an email pops into his inbox ‘Re: This Sunday’s Fixture, FFTMCC versus Islip’. With a sinking heart Ian opens it to read the inevitable “Hi Spam, hope you are well? (why do people do that, it’s not a question) sorry to inform you blah blah blah, the rest is lost as Ian sourly shuts Outlook and decides whether to a) bin the whole thing off, seeing that he’s on holiday or b) spend a couple of hours casting around other fixture secretaries in the hope of an alternative match.

Fast forward to Russ who sends out an email ‘Availability v Ewelme & Benson **IMPORTANT PLEASE READ**’ Which is exactly what Lord Lucan does, or the first line anyway ‘THE ISLIP GAME THIS SUNDAY 11TH IS NOW OFF AS THEY CANNOT RAISE A TEAM’. What he doesn’t read is the next line which says ‘However, Spam has managed to get a replacement fixture (referenced in the title of this email.)’ So, Lucan does what Lucan does and books himself in with the Bodleian for the Sunday. Such is life for Club Captains and Fixture Secretaries everywhere.

On to the Sunday and The MAD roll in to the picturesque village of Ewelme which comes straight from the pages of Country Living and where every house has been used as a crime scene in Midsomer Murders as some point.

I assume that Ewelme won the toss as it was a stiflingly hot day and we were fielding first. Opening the bowling was A Darley (4-0-18-0) who was fired up and ready to go after missing Tour due to being on-call (number of calls received, zero). At the other end was Reeves (4-0-16-0) who had just stepped out of his car after a two and a half hour trip down from Robin Hood country. Opening the batting was the standout K Walker (84 not out in just 78 balls) and the young W Rice (27) who will no doubt be playing at a higher level than this in a year or two. Well let’s hope so anyway, because he’ll certainly be bashing us to all parts if he’s still playing in this fixture.

Stand out bowlers for The MAD were M Rundle (4-0-13-3) who ripped through the engine room thanks to a lovely slower ball and a smart catch from skipper Russ. Also good to see Paul Bagot (6-0-32-3) picking up his 2nd, 3rd and 4th wickets for The MAD towards the end. There was some comedy fielding as Darley effetely got out the way of one travelled at some speed in his general direction and Russ dived over one on its way to the boundary. The heat was taking its toll and the other Ewelme players plus extras put on 96 to make 180 in total with Walker’s contribution, from their 35 overs.

Tea was good and especially nice that players from both sides made an effort to mingle, given that this was our first fixture. Apart from the contribution from A Darley (42) the less said about The MAD reply, the better, although we were missing arguably our five most consistent (i.e. good) batters. All out for 91. For some it was a merciful release and out (knackered) would be an unsurprising entry for several.

Darley whips one to leg.

Then it was back to the Shepherd’s Hut where again Ewelme came to join us. There were two questions on everyone’s lips. One, if you were in the Olympics which event would you be in? Two, hope you are well? No, two, why haven’t we played you before? Ewelme certainly seem our kind of team, generous in spirit and in the application of the law relating to wides, with a mixture of abilities and an understanding of the priorities when it comes to Sunday cricket, also an obsession with statistics to match our own. It was generally agreed that we should make this a regular fixture, inviting them back to Brasenose where hopefully we’ll give a better account of ourselves.
