Rarely has a MAD
fielding display been as inept as this one. Nobody was exempt from criticism,
with some blunders bordering on the farcical. If you needed a standard-bearer
for crap, then this was probably it. On a day where the match
was started early and reduced in length to cater for those wishing to experience
the latest England footballing fiasco in the evening, Turner won the toss and
opted to field first with ten men. In all honesty, he could have twenty men out
in the field and based on this display it would have made zero difference
given the gravity of incompetence on show. “Dear Polly, today has been rather pants, can I
come now?” The bowling had the
potency of a diluted Fruit Shoot and Enstone quickly switched through the
gears in making 1s into 2s, 2s into 4s and whatever they wanted really.
Hoskins got the most tap going for a seasoned 12 an over, but he could
rightly feel aggrieved by the one that was twatted straight down Howarth’s
throat at deep square. Ian barely moved, then adjusted his stance like a
drunk outside a nightclub, flapped at thin air and watched it disappeared for
four. Moments later we witnessed
a gaffe that appeared a microcosm of the afternoon as a whole, Roberts
sprawling to the ground some five minutes previous to a ball passing nowhere
near him. He resembled a fallen statue of liberty, hand reaching out in
despair to something unseen. This was side-splitting stuff, and a big top was
hastily erected to see tickets selling quickly at the door. This profligate
maelstrom of shite enabled M Brook to record a ton (previous scores not even
double digit), Hassan to help himself to 62 and Enstone 227-3 in total. Other
botches in the field included blind pirouettes under balls in the air, players
tumbling backwards to ones simply plopping over their heads, and… sigh. Tea
couldn’t come soon enough and thank you, Russ, for taking time out to feed
these clowns. Ainsworth and Shorten adding some gloss to a turd
of a day. Sadly, this match was
already a dead rubber after the first innings, but thankfully it did improve immeasurably
thereafter, but probably because Shorten (47) and Ainsworth (64*) batted for
two thirds of it. Ian also walked out to the middle and hit a few singles. Defeat by 72 runs and
one to forget, but it must be said it was lovely to host Enstone again with
the spirit and humour solid throughout. We hope to present a much better
version of ourselves next time. ’Sarah Chasm’
