The Just two years and 319 days since our first encounter on the South Coast, The MAD were able to return a favour and host Ferring CC as they toured slightly further north.

Nine members of the team from 2021 had signed up for the return fixture of sorts, Hoskins and Bateman being replaced by Harris and Hotson. Everyone was thankful that the format had been reduced from 40 overs to 35 overs during that passage of time.

Two things were unusual for us. Firstly, that the match was on a Saturday, meaning that teas had to be hastily arranged (on Kate’s birthday and the day after she left full-time employment in the NHS after over 35 years, with associated leaving do.) Also, that the venue was Cassington, the irony being that after The MAD had provided a sizable monetary thank you to Brasenose Dan, he was able to afford a holiday for the first time in several years and therefore couldn’t host us. Kudos to Ash and Gary from W+B for stepping in with the ground.

There were rumours of a gentleman’s agreement that whatever the result of the toss, Ferring would be batting and so it proved, with Darley (4-0-12-0) and Shorten (4-0-9-0) being economical but wicketless during the opening. Darley was shaping up for a stellar day, getting one to rise unreasonably to youngster C Day first ball. He got a glove which looped over wicket keeper Jake for Timms to take a tumbling catch from first slip. Everyone agreed that no-ball for bullying a child was the correct call. The openers were replaced by Roberts (5-0-35-1) and Reeves (7-0-35-0) during a largely uneventful passage of play except for catches being dropped at regular intervals, allowing Maclean-Brown to proceed towards 50* and retirement.

The skipper needed inspiration and therefore went for a distinctly left field choice of bowler – himself (3-0-18-1). The ‘bold’ move worked like a charm, a beautiful ball for both line and length did for Thompson (11) kissing the top of off stump with just his second delivery. However, after that there was no other drama as Rundle, Timms, Harris and Howarth didn’t really trouble the batsmen.

Cricket is a uniquely cruel sport. The ‘little death’ of losing your wicket or realising that your go at watching others chase after the ball that you’ve been chasing after for most of the afternoon is now over. The burning injustice and embarrassment of letting yourself and your team mates down can feel overwhelming in the moment. I’ve long come to understand that cricket is almost the worst. In fact, there’s only one thing worse than playing cricket and that is not playing cricket. It’s tough, but try to remember that Mr D, saves the expense of a new bat and helmet. Showed character to come back and apologise to each member of the opposition individually.

“It’s the hope that kills you” is a truism applied to cricket. Turning up week on week in the hope that things will one day go your way. Well, sometimes, they do! Two examples from this game are skipper Russ, who has gone through periods when he couldn’t buy a run but is now looking steady in anchoring the innings for a well-crafted 35. However, star of the show was John Harris and his first MAD 50 in 93 appearances. He even made a second appearance having retired at 50 then watching briefly as the tail collapsed before returning to make sure we continue the season without being all out. Enjoy it John, well played. Just don’t go expecting it to happen every week, or even most weeks. That way madness and broken equipment lies.

As the match petered out, with The MAD well short, the wind increased and the temperature dropped. Good to see you again Ferring, hope the rest of your tour went well. Let’s see you again on a Saturday (or Sunday) in the not-too-distant future.
