…Being the astute fellow that I am it seemed rather obvious that Heligoland, after mixing things up in their first game, were reverting to a more usual approach to this one. Retirements for batters 1-6 on scores varying from 29 to 3 would back this up. An imposing total of 136 off 16 looked, well, imposing. It looked even more imposingerer when chief whacker Shorten was castled first ball. Batsman came and went without a huge amount happening before The MAD finished on 75 which, I can confirm, is less than 136.

It was perhaps fitting that the Apples took home the trophy, Heligoland left with heads held high, and The MAD were left empty-handed. In all sorts of ways. It was agreed that JP deserved the Man of the Day award for his play but not for his commitment, so John won that. JP did get Champagne Moment of the Day for his sharp C&B. Joe not giving a shit about playing the second game despite having been selected was a rather obvious MAD Moment of the Day.

That this write-up is lacking in detail is huge testament to a great days’ cricket amongst incredibly witty and pleasant company. There was too much laughter, chatting, and beer to focus on the minor details of the actual cricket. The day only soured by the dissing of my beautiful shirt by Moritz as all and sundry tucked into the BBQ. We can’t thank Appleton enough for saving the day for us, and more so for Heligoland, but we do expect a red-carpet next time. I’ll join you in the Eight Bells if there is one.
