Having won the toss on the hottest day of the year so far, Skipper Howarth had little hesitation in batting first under the minarets on a rather lovely Magdalen College pitch. That the team would finish 10 or so short of what they regarded as par, would probably equate to about 110 short of being competitive against this particular opponent. Given their weight of numbers being supplied by Oxford CC 1st XI (as things would transpire) the result is largely immaterial.

With his last score of relevance dating back to 2023, it was most gratifying to see Mr Hadfield (44*) back amongst the runs whilst he continues to avoid the law after the tragic slaughtering of his nanny. Together with Shorten (23) they stuck on a pleasing fifty partnership first up. It was never easy going with the pitch giving a bit of pop at both ends and a touch of lateral movement. Jan added a workmanlike few, Lee (26) topped his yearly aggregate up and Howarth (16*) slogged a few at the death. Paul Bagot simply went for a casual little boundary walk.

Thereafter, not much happened other than most of everyone jogging to and from the boundary, diving under bushes, fumbling about broken glass and stinging nettles, and occasionally retrieving lost balls whilst the Strollers cantered home in 14.2 overs. The pluses were John Pyrah (2-0-11-1) taking his first MAD wicket and Timms bowling someone. The MAD Moment would be supplied by Hadfield, getting entangled under a wire fence whilst trying to get the ball back from neighbouring Trinity College. Alas, this wonderful pantomime was played out behind some parked covers, so only Howarth bore witness. Another point of note would be the team continuing the match in their absence and bowling a dot ball.

It would be easy to be negative about the match, so instead I’ll leave the words of Mr Shorten to summarise the evening out: “…great [bread] rolls [after the match]. So old fashioned. I love it. A flock of parakeets and a lovely sunset. Good to hang out in the end.”
