Squads. Arguably still a relatively modern concept. And an entirely necessary one, given the stresses and strains placed on the sporting behemoths of Man Utd, Real Madrid, New England Patriots, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and of course… Far From The MCC. The MAD list 28 names on their ‘current roster’. Some of those bit part players, some of those in bits, one of those on loan in Canada. All being told though The MAD can call on a solid core of around 20-23 players. FFTMCC have always moved with the times. It has even been said that they are modern day T20 pioneers… I mean its bollocks, but it has been suggested. Sort of.

9 Maddites united at the whitest of houses ahead of what promised to be an intriguing encounter against rivals Astons CC. They were joined by a lesser spotted Lord Lucan and the rarely seen Marquis Andrew ŕ Darley. The full compliment. The team email that went out a few days previous listed only Mr D Shorten as a 12th man. A twelfth knight no doubt, had the need arisen. [Shakespeare quip. Boom!] Thus it was slightly surprising to count no fewer than 5 ‘squad members’ on the side-lines as tea came to an end.

Where these gents here to cheer on their teammates? Was their presence merely to remind the powers that be of their talents as they looked to secure their place in future weeks and on the touring party? Or, had word gotten round regards the reappearance of last year’s champagne moment in the corresponding fixture, Mike’s flapjacks? Greedy, cheap feckers. Like it or not, the selected XI were playing for their place in the team. So how did they get on?

James William Pearson (107): Led from the front the front in compiling a well-made 60 (above) and rewarded with a MOTM vote from his peers. Marks off for getting out to R Smith though. Idiot. James, that is. Well, both. Actually, the book is wrong; he got out to T Dew. Idiot. The book that is. Trev is lovely. Still, marks off for probably getting out to R Smith later if he wasn’t already out to T Dew. Tour spot pretty much booked and looks a cert to play next week. Provided he isn’t afflicted with a mild cold, doesn’t have a slightly sore wrist, or hasn’t got his usual ‘went-to-bed-at-10:30-after-a-few-shandies-hangover’.

Lee Grant Ainsworth (114): Came in to the game as the season’s top run scorer (below) with the best average in the club. Untouchable. One run (also bowled by R Smith) and one drop later things didn’t seem so certain. Atoned slightly with a decent bowling stint. Place secure despite obvious shortcomings. (Left handedness).

Richard John Bingham Hadfield (50): Looked excellent for his 27 but The MAD have been waiting so long for him to go on to get a big one. Dismissed by a (surprisingly) good catch admittedly but a little too Mark Ramprakash for the selectors liking. A popular fellow amongst the team but this charming man was also undone by the Smiths. (A) drop. Will thus be sent to rediscover form with The Bodleian library. No doubt to make an aesthetically fluent 30 for them.

Ian Howarth (77): Mad’s enigma. On cracking form of late amid proclamations of ‘playing for himself’. For, not with. Well, both. A scratchy 11 due to the demons in his head, and S Smith’s (8-3-25-1) hand. In fact, his knock at Hythe & Dibden on last year’s Tour may have been better. Likely to keep his place as he’s very good with getting scorecards sent out to everyone.

Russell Paul Turner (122): What is there to be said about the loveable Russ (above – to camera) that hasn’t already been said? Not a lot but it’s probably worth repeating as the old bugger probably didn’t hear. Or has forgotten. A solid and sprightly 32* anchoring the innings home. That number 5 spot is his. Or number 3. Or anywhere from 1-11 on tour. Fancy a bowl? No, not for your chips.

Nick James Hebbes (71): 2 runs off 12 balls (below) at the coveted number 6 slot as the overs ticked down wasn’t quite the order of the day, although intent was there. With D Shorten looking on from the side-lines his place looks to be in jeopardy though. Time spent away from the team devising Channel 5 game shows may be advisable. Deserves another chance first though. Should get some runs and wickets at Cholsey next week...

Gareth John Timms (112): A wafty and erratic 7 off ten balls trying to get on with it. Got one of the two wickets (J Shea 44) with an absolute ripper (ahem) but was carted around by C Allen (34* off 21) in the process. Any number of those watching on could steal his place. They won’t though as he’s captain and decides who plays.  Tour place assured too. That’s what the Ł30 was for, right?

Martin Trevor Westmoreland (72): A keeper? Well he was today. Even with Geoff and Jake watching on displayed some fine glove work and added a little impetus towards the end of The MAD innings (10* off 12 balls). Geoff and/or Jake will find it hard to dislodge Moo (below) unless he double books himself for a father and son cricket day, or can’t make a few games on tour, or pulls his hammy or something.

Michael Keith Reeves (93): Didn’t bat and bowled nicely, as ever. Absolute shoe in for next week as nobody else can be bothered to make the teas and he helpfully gives the skipper a lift. Will probably make the touring party too as he’s arranged a fair bit of it.

Thornton Peter Wylam Smith (57): Expected to get out R Smith (72*) but failed. More than a tad unfortunate not to though. Squad rotated for next week as it’s the 3rd Sunday of the month, or something like that. Hard to imagine him not making tour. Largely because he can park his monstrosity (in a nice way) of an RV anywhere he so bloody desires.

Andrew Darley (98): With J Newman looking on perhaps Darley felt most at threat (below)? God knows why though as he no doubt can’t make next week, or the week after that, or the week after that, or tour, or next season. Dropped. And a drop. Go and bowl out some kids with no arms.

Indeed The MAD struggled and toiled as The MAD looked on. As much as it pains me to say it Astons chased the total down comfortably and professionally with Colin Allen adding the garnish.

All at The MAD wish Colin (seated behind Mr Darley above) the best over the next few weeks and months, knowing that if he battles off the pitch like he does on it for Astons and Blewbury. He’ll be back before we know it!
