In a world of click bait
and sound bites, these long rambling match reports just aren’t doing it
anymore. In an effort to spice things up and increase traffic to the website,
our visit to Isis CC has been handed over to the headline writers at MSN. This one simple trick
could save you thousands in life insurance. It was a slightly
shambolic team which turned up for one of our frequent encounters with
neighbours Isis. Reeves was returning after a few weeks out with a mysterious
knee compliant, Darley was complaining of leg, shoulder, neck, head and
stomach problems whilst Ainsworth and Timms were sweating cheap lager after
14 pints at the Common People festival the day before. If you have a
retirement fund of Ł250,000 you must read this next paragraph. Timms lost the toss to N
Wyatt, who then professed to not having a clue whether to bat or bowl first.
Those with injuries, self-inflicted or not were on balance glad to be batting
first on the basis it would mean more time to recuperate. G Carter (26 off
73) anchored the innings, at slightly less than a run per over as he lasted
to over 27. At the other end Ainsworth (26) was just glad to retain the
contents of his stomach. Emerson (12) started what would be a stellar day for
himself after being brilliantly caught in the slips by J Ponsford. The
ensuing cob was out of all proportion to the type of match, method of
dismissal etc etc. Fines, fines, fines. Openers Ainsworth (left) and Carter blunting the
Isis attack. She didn’t know the
camera was still running! Howarth (52 not out)
showed that there is still some talent in there somewhere, with a classy
innings, smacking the ball across the beautifully prepared outfield. At 110
for three in 31 overs, The MAD had wickets in hand, but were short of runs.
This provided the ideal platform for Shorten (23) to play a characteristic
innings which ended, six, dot, six, bowled. Read this next
paragraph before it is banned.
Next to the crease was
Webster (9). This normally placid, laid back Dutchman was infuriated by the
method of his dismissal during a failed run attempt after the ball hit his
bat, before he kicked it on to his stumps well short of his ground. Yes,
that’s out mate, you’ve got to go. Another cob ensued, fines, fines, fines.
The innings was finished with a very fine 18 not out from skipper Timms off
just nine balls. The Mad had scrambled to a very respectable 184-5 in their
40 overs. Young Isis paceman J. Ponsford passing Carter’s
bat. The Oxford woman lost 14 pounds by
sticking to these superfoods.
Tea was wonderful as
usual, particularly the multi coloured macaroons, in the atmospheric and
historic setting of the Queens College pavilion. Somebody you’ve never
heard of has tweeted something! In reply, Olly Walter
and B Hardman made a bright start. Darley (8-3-16-1) bowled with pace and
accuracy off a shortened run up. It’s the future dude, no need to flog
yourself running 20 yards. He was unlucky not to pick up more wickets as a
costly chance went down in the slips as, not for the only time that day,
Reeves cut in front of Shorten to attempt a catch. At the other end Reeves
dragged himself off his sick bed at the knee clinic to record (7-1-32-0) – he
was also a little unfortunate as Emerson spilled a chance to add to his day. Bowler N Wyatt and umpire G Timms stare down a
floating red ball. What these cricketers
look like now (number 11 will shock you). Emerson completed his
day by dropping another catch and then getting buffet (3-0-18-0) whilst
Shorten (3-0-12-0) faired a little better. At this point B Hardman was
starting to cut loose and the 185 for victory was looking distinctly in
range. However just as Isis had turned to K Ponsford to slow things down,
make the batsman play their shots and lure them into mistakes, so Timms
realised exactly what is needed at this level. Turning to himself (8-0-36-4),
B Hardman soon holed out to a good catch from Ainsworth in the deep, which
changed the game. For the second time that day, Reeves ran in front of
Shorten to this time take a catch. His claims that Shorten was shouting “Mike’s”
rather than “mine” are somewhat suspicious. Angelina Jolie and /
or Jennifer Lopez wore a dress. Another masterstroke
from the skipper was to bring on another long time injury dodger, M Rundle.
Again, length and line are the key to success here and he was well rewarded
with (8-1-18-3). J Hotson put a small blemish on an otherwise excellent day
behind the stumps by grounding a routine caught behind. As the required run
rate climbed and Isis ran short of wickets it was up to Howarth (2-0-6-0) and
Webster (1-0-4-0) to close out the innings. Avoid this form of
exercise if you want to get fit. So The Mad has once
again rolled over our friends and neighbours Isis CC. A good win against a
worthy opponent. Not our finest hour in some respects, with some in the team
forgetting our ethos for a moment. Although those cobbing fines are useful
for club funds, we’d be better off without them. One thing we do well is hang
around after a game drinking, in the warm evening sunshine, especially on a
bank holiday Sunday, so well done us. Emerson (bottom right looking happy) had a
stellar game. ‘Reevsie’
