With a forecast of heavy showers and sunshine, it was
one of those on again, off again matches, just like last year, where the
decision whether or not to make the teas is as crucial as winning the toss.
With skipper Moo still injured (groin) it was injured replacement skipper
Emerson (back / side) who lost the toss (that’s 13 out of 15 collective wrong
calls this season by the way) and so we were in the field. With the high
chance of time lost to rain the match was reduced to 35 overs. At least
Harwell has somewhere to hide from the elements (unlike Woodstock)…. An unusual opening attack of Reeves (7-1-24-0) and
Roberts (5-1-21-1) struggled in the strong wind but still managed a
reasonable economy. Against the cultured M Davies (81 n.o.) the strategy was
crystal clear. To pitch it up was rewarded with a dot, whereas anything short
would be slapped to the fence. Bob was extracting some bounce, which was
highly unusual given the soggy puddings we’ve played on for the last couple
of years. Geoff was deputising behind the stumps and stuck out a flipper at
one edged down the leg side to take a marvellous catch. Skipper Emerson then turned to his spinners of Hoskins
(7-0-27-1) and Timms (7-2-26-2) who also bowled tidily to restrict the
Harwell batsmen. Emerson and Hoskins caught regulation skiers, but nevertheless
they all still need taking. Bob dived full length (about eighteen feet, ten)
but could only get his fingertips to one. Never mind, still 50p. Timms had L
Fry plumb in front and the umpire raised his finger in agreement. Mr Fry had
an alternative view of proceedings and stated his opinion of bat first along
with words which would have earned a standard Ł5 fine had he been playing for
The MAD. In a display of incredible sportsmanship Timms called him back to
resume his innings, only to remove his bails in the next over. Rundle (6-1-23-0) and Howarth (3-0-12-0) saw out the
final overs leaving Harwell on 134 in their allotted 35. As The MAD walked
off to tea, the general consensus was that 135 was a distinctly gettable
total and there was a sense that with 6 wickets spare, Harwell could have
been more aggressive in the final few overs. So, 20 runs short? Only time
would tell. “This Carter,
chap – is it Geoff or George?” Emerson (3) opened the batting with himself along with
the schizophrenic Geoff / George (4/8). Who would we see today, the dashing
stroke playing Goweresque George or the plodding, nurdling, Chris Tavare like
Geoff? Although there were one or two nice shots, with 12 off 38 balls it was
more Geoff today. Emerson, still hampered by a pulled muscle soon edged one
behind, which bought Rahman (32) to the crease. The lad can bat, taking
several out of the middle and one in particular for a glorious six, back over
the bowlers head. Mutterings of ‘ringer’ would have perhaps been justified,
as he threatened to take the game away from Harwell, but towards the end of
his innings he slowed and was eventually caught. However, a significant job
had been done, with the opener A Richards now out of the way and Harwell
appearing to be lacking anything of pace with which to continue. D. Emerson
(3) displaying a square leg backward defensive shot. T Smith (7) struggled to place bat on ball until
eventually one came sweetly out of the middle. He was heard to pronounce
‘that’ll do it’ as it flew straight to the fielder at long on…. Howarth (33)
played well and propelled the score along at just above the required rate
until he spooned one to backward point, in a carbon copy of last year. With
the wind strengthening and the temperature dropping, the Mad batsmen in
waiting were starting to shiver, with some taking comfort in the pavilion
until their allotted turn. Hotson (3) scuffed and pushed before being run out by a
marvellous direct hit, which bought Reeves (23 n.o.) to the crease. In recent
weeks he has made himself useful, bashing pie, generally somewhere between
fine leg and deep square leg, to boost his average. So it proved again today,
short and wide down the leg side, thank you very much. He and Hoskins (7) did
have to exert themselves at one point with an all run 5. With Hoskins stumped
going for the match winner in came Bob (0 n.o.) I believe this now makes five
innings for Bob in which he hasn’t scored, reading golden, nought not out,
golden, golden, nought not out. Reeves eventually pushed a single to bring
the team home with three wickets and a little over four overs to spare. M. Reeves
(left) leads the teams off after some more successful average protection. With the rain never actually arriving, the 35 overs
made for a nice early finish and a chance to warm up, well it is the end of
June after all. So, a good win against a good team of similar standing and
ethos, Sunday cricket eh, what’s not to love? ‘Reevsie’
