Hotson – umpire and keeper extraordinaire.

Records are there to be broken and if you stand around long enough, they will be. A case example was this Sunday gone, where Mr Hotson generously volunteered to “umpire a few overs” after Astons won the toss and decided to field first after a heavy localised shower. Having failed to dress in anything resembling cricket attire, the drinks interval would come and go, and Jake would be subsequently forgot about in his cargo pants and a black T-shirt, out in the middle, for the entire MAD innings. All 35 overs of it.

Umpiring from the playground end, he witnessed Williams and Pearson flatten out any home team enthusiasm with a century stand worth 130 off 25.2 overs. This was the exemplar opening partnership of diligence and responsibility, whereby they laid down the groundwork for the latter overs slog. Williams (75) occasionally flirted airily with his driver on an indifferent pitch and Pearson (49) showcased his take on Geoffball whilst providing that steel and much needed glue. Outstanding effort lads in all respects.

Ainsworth would then swat a breezy 25, Turner (27*) biffed some latter overs filth and Howarth (5*) swung unsuccessfully at a few marsh flies. 200-3 all told and David Shorten didn’t bat, though he did warm his pads.

Tea is always a convivial affair at the Astons, with the roomy clubhouse always complemented by a decent spread and very friendly locals. The flap jacks proved highly popular, much to the disgust of Mr Reeves, but certainly shone a light on what the use of more expensive ingredients can bring about.

Having realised Jake was playing once he finally clambered into his whites, his teammates were suitably impressed by his standing behind the timber for a further 34.4 overs. In total and factoring in his officiating from the “even numbered over end”, Mr Hotson stood behind those stumps on this Sunday for exactly 51.4 overs. If anyone could have advised Skipper Turner on what the ball was doing and who was doing what, it was most certainly Jake.

A demonstration of some assisted standing.

His moment would arrive a short time after Reeves (7-2-15-2) tempted Sparrow (33) into trying to clear Shorten at mid-on, thus ending a cavalier opening stanza of 82 mostly fuelled by some utter toilet from Howarth. With Rundle (7-1-31-1) tearing up the hill into the wind, Jake snaffled an edge to see the talented Corbett depart for 46. A champagne catch and a suitable reward for refusing to be seated all day.

With the ageless Allen (5) becoming another victim of the magnetic hands of Dave Shorten, the shambolic run out of chief tonkmaster Springer (6) really did kill the Astons run chase. With the wheels now shearing off the batting axle, one should make mention of young teenage glovesman G. Jarman (22), who for no reason other than that known to our hosts, came to the crease at lowly #9 and timed the ball as sweetly as anyone. A fine demonstration of burgeoning talent and an enjoyable spectacle for the ageing and cynical dinosaurs that surrounded him.

Another cricketing gem would later go to a vote at the nearby pub. A neatly timed drive would have the ball slowing as it approached the boundary with Mr Ainsworth bearing down. There, sprinting towards it in the opposite direction was young Blake (his son), hopping over the line, fielding the ball and handing it to his disbelieving dad. Four. Absolutely brilliant.

With the small matter of preventing 44 from the final over, Turner now stole the ball away from Ainsworth Snr (5-0-13-1) and instead handed it over to Pearson, subsequently going on to record the quite disgraceful figures of 0.4-0-1-2 (including a caught and bowled). Thankfully, Lee didn’t once mutter under his breath or question this tactic.

So, the Post Tour MAD revival gathers apace, and the not-so-quiet voices are talking up an unbeaten end to the season that holds the sporting media agog. Steady on, lads, steady on.

The final act of this day was for the team to repair the recently reopened ‘Olivier at The Chequers’, a locally supported pub venture and very nice it is too, the heart and beat of the village now restored. Here, at an outside table, Jake Hotson stood with his pint to hand and was both amused and elated the MAD Moment of the day should indeed go to B. E. Ainsworth (aged 6). There you go, young man. You are now recorded for prosperity forever another day, or at least until the aforementioned dinosaurs die out and this website closes down through unpaid bills.

Referencing Jake, I leave you with this quote from a certain Mr Marley: “Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight.”

…and also the below (as now amended), as technically Jake’s effort was ‘in the field’, though not to the extent that Mr Timms crippled himself some eleven years ago:
