Sunday saw a MAD rarity, the hosting of a touring team.
A rarity because you have to question the sanity of anyone choosing to tour
to one of the most expensive cities in the UK, short on accommodation and
miles from the sea with little in the way of crazy golf to write home about.
So, congratulations to Ferring CC for setting aside the traditional (for The
MAD anyway) tour locations to travel up and visit us. It was only the second meeting of the two sides, the
first being a run and incident packed extravaganza documented in 2021 [or
make use this link to match # 549 access it]. With the
forecast for heavy showers later in the day, it was one of those on again off
again, shall we bother preparing teas type games. However, knowing the
disappointment of travelling miles only to try and find something to do in a
foreign town (ahem, Telford), The MAD were determined to provide some sort of
contest to our touring friends. Hence a start time of 12:30 was agreed,
meaning that sandwiches had to be hastily prepared, kids collected from
football, full English’s scoffed down at pace etc. Then unfortunately, about
half an hour was wasted as the precise format of the game was agreed and the
decision on when tea would be taken was made. For the record it was 30 overs
(thus buggering all records and fantasy jokers) with
tea to be taken after. Ainsworth
leaning against the stumps to bowl. Skipper Russ won the toss, but generously offered our
guests the choice which they gratefully accepted to bat first. Ferring were
down to 10 players due to a proper* injury to their star batsman / bowler who
instead took up scoring alongside Spam who was also sitting this one out with
a sore knee and in solidarity with a recovering Vic. * a bulging disk or something, it certainly had an
impressive name. Under overcast skies Ferring struggled with the low
bounce of Oxfordshire pitches and with the exception of C Tams, no-one really
got going. He was eventually undone by Reeves (6-0-29-3) given out LBW. Fair
play to the Ferring umpire for giving it, obviously unaware of the law that
right-handed batsmen can’t be out LBW to left handed
bowlers. Or maybe that only applies to native Oxfordshire umpires, not that
I’m bitter. Standout bowler was C Roberts (6-2-18-2) and great work too from
Kaito (5-0-25-2) winning champagne moment for his first MAD wicket, followed
in quick succession by his second MAD wicket. He did however put in a strong
challenge for MAD moment, beautifully diving over the top of one in the
outfield. Extras contributed 30 and was comfortably the second highest
scorer. The match was briefly halted towards the end of the
Ferring innings. With J Butler and P Butler batting and K Williams and C
Williams bowling, two runs for a wide and no extra ball, one run for a no
ball with an extra ball but no free hit it all become too much for the
scorers who had to collect their thoughts and check their scribblings. If
only Shamita had been there to sort it all out. Ferring achieved 128 in their
30 overs, which surely would be a walk in the park for The MAD. Indeed, The MAD got off to a very strong start, racing
to 27 off the first four overs thanks to C Williams (20) and M.O.T.M Hadfield
(59 n.o) moving the game along rapidly. However,
everything changed with the introduction of spinners C King (6-0-9-1) and J
Binns (6-1-21-0). Geoff went for a 19-ball duck and The MAD scored seven runs
in seven overs. Turner keeps
the ball away from his nuts. Needing 32 off the final 6 overs we were entering
squeaky bum territory with general agreement that we’d cocked things up from
better positions in the past. However, a few biffs from Darley (20), Turner
(8) and Reeves (4 n.o.) bought us to the verge of
victory before Ainsworth (6 n.o.) got us over the
line with five balls to spare. The 2021 match report states that Ferring CC are
welcome at our place any time. That bond has only been strengthened after two
close games played in an excellent spirit. We hope that we’ll be down on the
South Coast and they’ll be up in the dreaming spires
again in the future. ’Reevsie’
